When the shadow of Earth cast by the Sun falls across the Moon, we see an eclipse of the Moon. The outer part of the shadow, the penumbra, slightly dims the Moon's brightness. When the full shadow, or umbra, crosses the Moon, it grows much darker, often looking reddish in a real eclipse. The Moon rarely becomes completely invisible during an eclipse.
